The St. John's Red Storm survived a furious Brown second-half rally to hold on for a 79-76 win over the Bears at Carnesecca Arena in the Philly Hoop Group Classic . The Bears trailed for the entire second half but pulled to within one point of St. John's, 77-76, on a 12-foot jump shot by freshman Tucker Halpern with 41 seconds remaining in the game . ...  

West St. John scored a come-from-behind victory to get its season started with a win Tuesday, toppling Lutcher 38-33 in Edgard. "Hopefully, it'll lead to a start like we had last year, after beating Lutcher in the first game," said West St. John coach Lester Smith. Senior Kyla Morris scored 22 points to lead all scorers, getting most of her work done in the paint and at the line.

East St. John moved to 2-0 on Thursday night, knocking off Central Lafourche 54-45 in front of the Wildcats' home fans. Kalen Henderson and Patrick Gales each scored 10 points, and Jalen Kenner added eight to lead 12 Wildcats scorers. ESJ coach Yussef Jasmine says that the even scoring distribution was no fluke.  

Basil Rajapaksa, a senior adviser to his brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Saturday the refugees will be free to return to their villages after Dec. 1, and the camps will be completely closed by Jan. 31. The announcement came two days after the U.N. humanitarian chief, John Holmes, pressed Sri Lanka to allow the war refugees to leave. Sri Lanka pledged in September to the U.N. that all civilians would be sent home by the end of January.  

USC Aiken junior Byron Faison sank a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the visiting Pacers to a 92-90 win over Catawba in the opening game of the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Pacers win their opener, while the Catawba falls to 2-1. Faison's shot came after a scramble off an offensive rebound by Sterling Council that was knocked loose in the lane. The ball bounced out to Faison at the top of the key and his shot hit the front rim and bounced through for the winning ba  

Long before they were deadlocked, Junior's jurors were divided. The panel considering the fate of Gambino family boss John A. (Junior) Gotti fussed and feuded throughout the nine-week trial, even as the judge tried to appease his troubled panel. Four were dismissed before getting a chance to deliberate.  

St. John's High School students stack boxes of books at Centro Las Americas on Sycamore Street yesterday. The books will be used for the Centro Las Americas Toys for Tots campaign and the English as a Second Language program. The students collected more than 1,000 books, and also made a monetary donation from friends.

TELEVISION and stage star John Barrowman will visit Cardiff next week to sign copies of his new DVD. The actor, entertainer and musical performer is best known for his role as Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood. He will be at the Asda Superstore in Cardiff Bay between noon and 1pm on Monday.
